Who would have thought that my fascination with old vintage windup toys could become so addictive? First of all it was little toys that you got inside cereal packets and would eat one or two bowls just so that you would get through the cereal quicker and then would have a better chance of the toy falling into your bowl. I used to annoy my brother and sisters as I would like to keep the toy in mint condition and would not let them play with it as they were a little too rough.

For some reason I can’t remember when but I eventually ended up collecting windup toys I was just fascinated and loved nothing more that to find them, wind them up and watch them run down again. The more noise that it made the better I liked it. As my collection grew people soon learnt that I would either buy old toys from them or in some cases lucky enough for different relatives give me the toys that they had been hanging onto for years and did not know what they wanted to do with them. These were some of my prized toys and were virtually in mint condition with very little use by the old owners.

Space was a problem as my collection began to grow but still I wanted to hang onto them and couldn’t bear to let any of them go to new owners. I was looking for a hammer one day in Dad’s shed and in the rafters something red caught my eye and what it was is one of those tin red pedal cars that my brother had when he was very small.

Pedal cars are a version of children’s toy car that now has many adults collecting these gorgeous cars. These cars were very popular around 1930′s, most of these pedal toys were then made of steel. Many collectors enjoy vintage models in both their original and restored conditions. There are now man reproductions available of the many popular models of the 1950′s and 1960′s; now original versions of these models can sometimes fetch several thousand dollars, the prohibitive price of the cars making reproductions a wise choice for most collectors.
